When the phone rings or the email pings at the Women in Trucking office, it’s often a driver who needs help. And though WIT president Ellen Voie has spent her career in the trucking industry, she never drove. It was a gap in her trucking knowledge she decided to fill. “We have a lot of driver members, and we get a lot of calls from women asking how to become a trucker,” she says. “ I wanted to better understand the training process and get my CDL.”

She did, then wrote a book about it. Crushing Cones is available at womenintrucking.org for $14.95. While telling her story, it also offers details on getting through school and starting a career in trucking.

Voie’s time on the road gave her a trucker’s perspective. “The most amazing thing was how little regard car drivers have for big rigs,” she says. “It’s as if they just don’t understand physics.”
