2010: A Look Ahead

The engines of the future must meet increasingly stringent environmental standards

The EPA 2007 engines are barely on the road, and attention is quickly turning to the next round of emissions regulations: 2010. Early 2007 test engines seemed to operate quite well. However, the extra heat rejected through the radiator and into the under-hood spaces was tough on accessories and components. Fleets involved in development reported at the Fall Technology and Maintenance Council (TMC) meeting that while the engines operated well, there were problems with other parts such as …

In Memoriam: Bill Wilhite Jr.

His love for truckers made Wilhite’s TA special

The future of fuel economy may lie in trailer aerodynamics

The price of diesel may have a new floor: $3 a gallon. That’s spending 50 cents or more a mile just for fuel. Something has to be done to improve fuel mileage — but what? Engine efficiency is holding or improving slightly despite all the new hardware needed to meet emissions regulations. Tractors have become more aerodynamic, helping bring us from less than four mpg to more than six. Every manufacturer has second generation aerodynamic tractors, so any further improvements will be …

A flying car may be here sooner than you think

Have you seen that bumper sticker, “I’d Rather Be Flying”? Well, soon a car and a plane may be one and the same. Terrafugia, a Massachusetts company, is developing a car/light plane hybrid called the Transition that should be available to consumers by 2009 for an estimated $148,000. Owners can drive it to the nearest small airport and, with the push of a button, extend its wings and fly it up to 500 miles away. When they land, they’ll simply fold up the wings and com…
