I met June at C.R. England. She was already a really experienced driver but she was teaming with someone who was not up to par. We were both helping train people at the time, and then we kind of just got together. It happened quick! We just knew we were a fit.
I’m 75 years old and I’ve been an independent owner-operator for 41 years. My journey in trucking began when I got out of the Army at age 20 and drove a truck for a pulpwood and logging business I started with my dad in Wisconsin.
I’ve always been a sucker for anything with a motor. When I was growing up, I didn’t care about hunting or fishing, but if it had a motor on it, I was ready to go. My first experience driving a truck was on my grandpa’s dairy farm in Virginia when I was 11.
I got bit by the trucking bug early in life in Natchez, Miss. Trucking is a lifestyle, and once you get bit, you can’t turn back. My father had his CDL, so I grew up in and around the driver’s seat.
I got into the trucking industry in the early ’90s after working in construction and being laid off for the second time in 12 years. I decided it was time for a change and enrolled in a local trucking school here in California.
