Here comes the bride - in a very large truck
For a trucker, Big Rig Limo offers the perfect vehicle for a trip down the aisle.
The company, based in Scotland, offers a decked-out truck and driver for hire, so bride or groom can truly make a big entrance. “We always wanted to own our own American truck,” says Kevin Nimmo, who runs the company with his nephew Lee. “We got the idea of converting a truck into a limousine from people in the U.K. who use old fire trucks for bachelor and bachelorette parties. We thought we could do something similar with style with a Kenworth W900L 86-inch studio sleeper.”
The found the truck they wanted for sale online in March 2007, and made arrangements with the owners in Nebraska to ship it overseas.
Once the 2000 model Kenworth arrived, the men got to work transforming it from a work truck to a partymobile.
“We stripped out the interior and fitted seven seats in the rear,” says Nimmo. “Now it has two 15-inch LCD screens, a cinema surround-sound DVD system, a 10-disc CD multi changer, a disco ball light on the ceiling, neon lights and a false exhaust stack inside, which has a smoke machine fitted into it.”
The company has hired out the truck for 10 weddings so far, usually booked by truck drivers or retired truckers. One bride booked the Big Rig Limo as a surprise for her husband-to-be. The wedding was in Northern Ireland, a four-hour ferry ride and two-hour drive for the Kenworth. The groom, who has his own trucking company, was floored when he got a look at the transportation he and his best man had to the wedding.
“When we arrive at a wedding, the people there are just amazed,” Nimmo says. “Where we are, on the West Coast of Scotland, this is the only vehicle of its kind.”
