Move It On Over
Let emergency vehicles get by
A RECENT POLL FOUND that 71 percent of Americans don’t know about move over laws. This legislation requires that drivers, when approaching an emergency vehicle stopped on a roadway with its lights flashing, slow down and change lanes to give the emergency responders space.
All but eight states — Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Rhode Island, plus Washington, D.C., have some form of a move over law. An increasing number of states are also adding tow trucks to their move over laws, recognizing that these vehicles are often on the scene of accidents.
